What Drill Bit is Best for Stainless Steel?
Share
Stainless steel is one of the most challenging materials to drill because it can quickly work harden when too much heat is generated. Using the right drill bit and proper drilling technique makes all the difference.
We recommend Norseman Drill & Tool CN-Tech drills. Their Nitride coating & Cryo treatment creates a hardened surface that is excellent for stainless steel. For best results, use a slower drill speed, apply steady pressure, and always use a quality cutting fluid to reduce heat buildup. Avoid spinning the drill bit against the material without cutting, as this can cause the stainless steel to harden and make drilling more difficult.
For cutting fluid we always recommend Ultra S/P cutting tool lubricant. Its high viscosity, super concentrated no run formula, clings to even vertical surfaces for continual lubrication. This fluid will extend tool life and yield a super smooth machined finish.
